Breastfeeding While Black During COVID-19
ESSENCE spotlighted Nurse Jerelle in a feature about the added barriers Black mothers faced while breastfeeding during the pandemic. She was profiled as the lactation specialist voice in the story.
She shared what she was seeing firsthand: families eager to leave the hospital early, often before breastfeeding felt established, and less in-person help once they got home. Her support groups and childbirth classes moved online, and her message to new parents was simple: never be afraid to reach out to a lactation consultant.
The feature also told why she started Baby Blessed Beginnings. Her own breastfeeding struggles inspired her to support and educate Black mothers who want to breastfeed.
